Poll: Trump enters office with historically low approval rating

President-elect Donald Trump has the lowest recorded approval rating heading into his final days before taking office, a new poll has found.

A Gallup poll conducted two weeks prior to the inauguration found that more than half of Americans disapprove of Trump at 51 percent, while only 44 percent of Americans approve of him.

Trump’s approval rating has dropped — last month’s Gallup poll showed the president-elect at a split 48 percent approving and disapproving.

Trump’s 48-percent approval last month was already the lowest for any presidential transition the polling company has measured, based on Gallup’s measured ratings since former President Bill Clinton.

By comparison, Clinton had a 68 percent approval rating and 18 percent disapproval rating in Gallup’s final poll before his 1993 inauguration, former President George W. Bush had a 61 percent approval and 25 percent disapproval rating before being sworn in in 2001 and President Obama had an 83 percent approval and only 12 percent disapproval rating in the week leading up to his own Inauguration Day.

Gallup’s survey was based on interviews conducted January 4-8 of a random sample of 1,032 adults. The poll has a 4 point margin of error.
